Amplifying the Cry for Justice

STAND WITH SUDAN

As-salāmu ʿalaykum, Beloved Ummah of Muhammad Rasool Allah sallallaahu alaihi wa sallam!

There is an ongoing genocide and humanitarian crisis in Sudan. The Sudanese people continue to endure unimaginable suffering, with their plight exacerbated by a brutal civil war, mass killings, famine, and disease outbreaks. It is a moral imperative for Muslims and people of conscience worldwide to learn more about what is happening in Sudan, raise their voices in defense of innocent civilians, and work towards a lasting solution to this devastating conflict.

Sudan, a nation in Northeast Africa, has been engulfed in a brutal civil war since April 2023. The conflict between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) has escalated dramatically. The RSF, originally formed from the Janjaweed militias and backed by the UAE, has committed horrific atrocities including massacres, mass graves, and genocidal violence against civilians.

The world is currently witnessing one of the worst humanitarian crises and genocides of our time. Official estimates indicate at least 15,500 deaths, though other estimates are as high as 150,000. The conflict has displaced over 12 million people, with more than 25 million Sudanese civilians in need of humanitarian aid—more than half of Sudan's population. The country is in the grips of mass famine, with millions facing acute food insecurity. The situation has been compounded by severe disease outbreaks including cholera, measles, and malaria, with almost three-quarters of health facilities out of service.

Muslims around the world must take it upon themselves to learn more about the situation in Sudan. Knowledge is a powerful tool, and understanding the history, politics, and human rights issues involved is crucial. The Quran in Surah Al-Imran, Verse 3 reminds us: "You are the best community ever raised for humanity—you encourage good, forbid evil, and believe in Allah." Through this, we understand that Muslims must embrace justice and forbid that which causes injustice.

The narrative portrayed by mainstream media has often overlooked the harrowing reality faced by innocent civilians in Sudan. The RSF has shown no reluctance to hide their atrocities, publishing numerous war crimes on social media. RSF commanders have been recorded instructing troops with genocidal rhetoric: 'I don't want any prisoners—kill them all.' Relief operations are on the brink of collapse due to insecurity, dwindling supplies, and funding shortages. Here's how you can help bring light to the obscured plight of the Sudanese people:

  1. Understanding the Genocide:

    • RSF Massacres and War Crimes: : The Rapid Support Forces (RSF) have committed horrific atrocities across Sudan. In El Fasher alone, the RSF killed 460 people at the hospital, with another 260,000 believed to be trapped in the city. Within the first few days of capturing El Fasher, the RSF was responsible for at least 1,500 civilian deaths. RSF soldiers have published numerous war crimes and atrocities on social media, with commanders recorded instructing troops with genocidal rhetoric: 'I don't want any prisoners—kill them all.' Nathaniel Raymond, executive director of the humanitarian research lab at Yale's school of public health, reported that the RSF had 'begun to dig mass graves to collect bodies throughout the city.'
    • UAE Backing and External Actors:: The UAE continues to be the main backer of the RSF, propagating instability in the genocide-ravaged land. Weapons from the UAE are routed through Chad's Amdjarras Airport to support the RSF. The relationship is financial—the RSF controls areas with large gold mines (Darfur alone has more than four or five gold mines), and the UAE is a gold trading hub. Sudan produced a record 64 tonnes of gold in 2024, generating about $1.57 billion. Additionally, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, and Israel have played key roles in exacerbating the conflict, with vested interests in preventing Sudan from having a civilian and democratic government.
    • Humanitarian Collapse and Famine:: The United Nations has warned that relief operations in Sudan are on the brink of collapse due to insecurity, dwindling supplies, and funding shortages. Over 25 million Sudanese civilians are in need of humanitarian aid—more than half of Sudan's population. The country is in the grips of mass famine, with millions facing acute food insecurity. Almost three-quarters of health facilities are out of service, and diseases including cholera, measles, and malaria are spreading. Two-thirds of the population lacks access to healthcare.
  2. Educate Yourself and Others:

    • Understanding the Scale:: Official estimates indicate at least 15,500 deaths, though other estimates are as high as 150,000. The conflict has displaced over 12 million people, with more than 25 million Sudanese civilians in need of humanitarian aid. The crisis has been compounded by severe disease outbreaks including cholera, measles, and malaria. The RSF has seized large areas of the country, with North Kordofan now at imminent risk of falling under RSF control.
    • Deepen Your Understanding:: Delve into reports from the United Nations, Amnesty International, humanitarian organizations, and independent journalists covering the crisis. Read articles from Islamic news sources like S2J News, ICNA, and Islam21c that provide detailed analysis of the genocide. Explore documentaries and resources detailing the life and struggles of the Sudanese people. Understand the historical context: the removal of Omar al-Bashir in 2019, the 2021 military coup, and how external actors like the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, and Israel have vested interests in destabilizing Sudan.
  3. Raise Your Voice:

    • Social Media Activism: : Utilize platforms like TikTok, YouTube, Twitter(X), Facebook, and Instagram to disseminate information and express solidarity with the Sudanese people. Engage in online campaigns promoting hashtags like #StandWithSudan, #SudanCrisis, and #SudanNeedsHelp to broaden global awareness surrounding the crisis.
    • Engage with Lawmakers: : Urge your representatives to call for immediate ceasefire, humanitarian access, and to address the humanitarian crisis in Sudan. Advocacy can play a crucial role in influencing political discourse and actions on a national and international level.
  4. Support Humanitarian Efforts:

    • Donate Generously:: Numerous organizations are working tirelessly to provide aid to the affected individuals in Sudan. Your contributions can significantly assist in the provision of medical supplies, food, water, and shelter to the victims of the conflict. Support reputable organizations like Baitulmaal, Islamic Relief USA (IRUSA), MATW Project USA, and other humanitarian groups that are actively working in Sudan. According to Baitulmaal, over 10 million people are displaced inside Sudan, and nearly 4 million have fled to neighboring countries. IRUSA reports that nearly 25 million people—more than half the population—are facing acute food shortages. Hundreds of thousands of Sudanese civilians are afflicted with dehydration, starvation, and disease caused by conflict—your donation can save lives.
    • Volunteer: : Offer your time and skills to NGOs and initiatives focused on alleviating the sufferings of the Sudanese people. Engage in fundraising events, awareness campaigns, or provide legal, medical, or educational support as per your capabilities. Organize community events that highlight the situation in Sudan, such as lectures, film screenings, or panel discussions.
  5. Foster Interfaith and Community Dialogue:

    • Prayers: : Organize and participate in prayers for peace and justice in Sudan and worldwide. Prayer, as a profound act of solidarity and empathy, transcends religious and cultural boundaries, uniting individuals in a collective plea for humanity
    • Community Discussions: : Facilitate discussions within your community to raise awareness about the crisis in Sudan and foster a deeper understanding of the humanitarian and political implications involved.
  6. Global Solidarity:

    • Support Sudanese Refugees: : Many Sudanese people have been forced to flee their homes and seek refuge in neighboring countries. Support organizations that assist refugees and internally displaced persons from Sudan. With over 12 million displaced, this is one of the largest displacement crises in the world.
    • Advocate for Peace and Accountability: : Call for immediate ceasefire and peaceful resolution to the conflict. Support diplomatic efforts and international mediation to end the violence and restore stability to Sudan. Advocate for accountability for war crimes and genocide. Urge governments to stop supporting the RSF and other warring factions. As Agnès Callamard, Amnesty International's Secretary General, said: "The world cannot continue to turn its back on civilians in Sudan, especially in the Kordofan region, when the grave dangers they face are clear for all to see. It is unconscionable to stand by as civilians are at risk of being killed by RSF fighters."

The harrowing images emanating from Sudan are a stark reminder of the indomitable spirit of the Sudanese people amidst insurmountable adversities. It beckons a global community to transcend geopolitical affiliations and uphold the sanctity of human life and dignity. As members of the global community, let us heed this call, extend our support, and tirelessly advocate for a world where peace, justice, and humanity prevail.

In a world inundated with divergent narratives, it's imperative to seek the truth, challenge the bias, and stand in solidarity with those oppressed. The struggle for justice in Sudan is not just a regional concern, but a global call for humanity, justice, and truth. The situation in Sudan is one where we must rise and denounce the injustices of the warring factions, and instead promote peace, raise awareness, and give aid. Your action, no matter how small, can contribute to a larger wave of change, illuminating the path towards justice and peace in Sudan.
